Some of the most frequently used insecticides in current UK domestic and commercial pest control are from the groups of carbamates and pyrethroids.
Carbamate insecticides are available in the form of wettable powders and ready to use dusts. The most common of carbamates, bendiocarb is superior ant and wasp killer.

Pyrethroid insecticides are now the leading group of insecticides in the UK market by far. Pyrethroids are similar to pyrethrins. Their structure is based on pyrethrum, a natural insecticide which is contained in chrysanthemum flowers, but it has a higher biological activity and is more stable than its natural model. As the pyrethroids are chemically relatively similar, a pest species resistant to one member of the pyrethroid family is often resistant to another or even to all types. Replacing one pyrethroid by another may not therefore be appropriate when resistance occurs. The onset of resistance is frequently accompanied by increased doses of toxic pesticides, gradual loss of pest control.
One of the ways for insect control to suppress this resistance is the use of synergists such as pipernyl butoxide (PBO) with insecticides. It has little or no insecticidal activity of its own but it potentiates that of pyrethrins and pyrethroids by inhibiting the hydrolytic enzymes responsible for metabolism of pyrethrins and pyrethroids in arthropods (insects, myriapodas, crustaceas and arachnidas), thereby increasing the insecticidal activity of pyrethrins and synthetic pyrethroids by 2 to 12 times. This allows products containing piperonyl butoxide to be equally effective with lower concentrations of insecticides.
