DIY Wasp Nest Removal

March 14, 2014

Disclaimer

It is not my intention to encourage anyone to removing active wasp nests by self. On the contrary, I do not recommend it for general members of public. However, if someone does want to attempt DIY wasp nest removal I can’t prevent them from doing so. Here you can find some hints for how to do it in order to make it effective while minimizing risks of harm to yourself and others. Importantly, do not proceed with DIY wasp nest removal if you are alone in a case you got stung and fell into anaphylactic shock that could be fatal without receiving emergency medical help.

Preparations and Precautions

The best time for doing DIY wasp nest removal is either early morning or late evening when there’s the least wasp activity outside the nest. Wear long sleeved trousers and shirt made of a thick material. Wear hat. Mind your face is still not protected. Wasps are likely to get irritated just after treatment and will be flying about in an increased number for a while. Therefore make sure the windows and doors on your house are closed, it is a good idea to also tell your next door neighbours to do so too. Keep passers-by away. Watch first the nest from a distance to see from which direction the wasps are mainly approaching their nest so you can avoid them. Get your gear ready for action in advance while standing in a safe distance from the nest.

Products and Application

Dusts (Powders)

The most suitable products for DIY wasp control are dusts (powders) that contain 0.5% Bendiocarb as the active ingredient. Most ant powders would also be suitable. A difficulty may be when it comes to its application as you will not want to stay up close to the wasp nest during the treatment. Sprinkle the dust onto the nest or on wasp alighting surfaces. Try to put it inside the nest or as close to the wasp entry point as possible.

Sprays

A can of spray called usually simply Wasp Nest Destroyer (contains tetramethrin or permethrin as active ingredients) is suitable for treating small wasp nests while it can be applied from about 1 meter distance. It dispenses insecticides either in the form of liquid or foam.

Do Not Use

However you might be tempted please refrain from using fire, explosives, flammable liquids, water, electricity, acids, hot air blower, vacuum cleaner and other similar devices and substances. Those are not only ineffective but they can also put you and others in danger and so defeat the purpose by damaging your health and property.

After Treatment

Whichever treatment you do be aware the insecticide you choose will need certain hours or even days to work before the nest clears. To do wasp nest removal treatment correctly (getting rid of the wasps completely) you should allow time after treatment for the wasps that were out foraging to return back to the treated nest and poison themselves. Stay away from the nest after treatment. There’s no need to physically removing a treated wasp nest as it disintegrates itself by time. It is also beneficial to leave a treated wasp nest in place for at least some time because wasps from other untreated nearby nests may come and enter the nest in their search for food. Such wasps contaminate themselves with residual insecticide inside the treated nest and may even take some into their own nest and so poison more wasps.
