Rats, Mice, Squirrels & Rodent Control

October 10, 2015

Ingress of vermin such as rats, mice and grey squirrels into buildings increases in the autumn and continues through the winter up until the spring. Decreased food availability and harsher outdoor weather conditions are to blame. Flooding can make populations of rats move on.

Squirrel Control

Grey Squirrels come to occupy lofts above buildings in search of temporary shelter and nesting/breeding sites. Squirrels need daily access in and out of the building and they gain this through holes and gaps in soffits, roof, vents and via structural faults. Usually there is only one squirrel per loft space but there could be a pair of squirrels or a nest with a mother-squirrel and 3-4 offspring. A male squirrel would live somewhere nearby. I catch squirrels with live traps and killer traps. Live trap is a cage that contains palatable bait, displayed and easily accessible to squirrels via an open door that shuts as soon as a squirrel reaches the bait. This trap is checked daily and a squirrel is removed alive the same day it is caught. Other types of traps I have been using with good results are Fenn traps and even better Magnum Body-grip traps. These traps are equipped with strong jaws powered by a spring and capable of killing a squirrel instantly. Magnum Body-grip is best set up baited and placed on a squirrel's run. Unlike any live traps killer traps do not require daily follow ups. Grey squirrels are not known as vector of diseases but they do carry fleas that are transferable to people. Damages to cables, pipes and insulation by squirrels in lofts can be very costly.

Rat Control

Brown Rat (also known as Common Rat and Norway Rat) is the one that dominates nowadays across Scotland. Populations of Black Rat (also known as Ship Rat and Roof Rat) are less frequently encountered at sea ports, harbours and along canals. To control rats I use toxic baits inside and outside houses, placed within tamper-resistant bait stations. Rat burrows, if present, are baited with loose formulations rodenticides. Most of the baits are anti-coagulant 2-nd generation rodenticides. Administering of rodenticide is in compliance with the latest CRRU Code of Best Practice to protect non-target animals as well as people. Rat control treatments typically require 2 visits about 30 days apart. An initial visit comprises of an inspection/survey and treatment.

Baits are checked 4 weeks later during a follow up visit. An average rat problem is resolved by the time of the 1st follow up visit. It should be noted rats are carriers of serious diseases transferable to man.

Mouse Control

Primarily it is House Mouse that is the pest but it can also be Field Mouse or Wood Mouse finding a way in and starting infestations inside your home. The latter named mice readily adapt to living indoors and can infest kitchens, lofts and also living quarters of houses. An effective mouse control treatment takes two visits, one week to 10 days apart between an initial and a follow up.

Most effective formulations of toxic mouse baits are administered safely in tamper-resistant bait stations that are positioned throughout treated premises. Mice do get involved in disease transmission onto people. Damages to buildings and/or stock by mice can become a major problem if neglected.
