Ants and Wasps

Martin Kroupa

Followed closely by wasps ants are one of the first seasonal insect pests out in April across Scotland

Black (Garden) Ant, Common Wasp and German Wasp

It is not uncommon with Black Ants and other nuisance & garden pests to start seeing them in the spring months more often. Preventive measures such as perimeter spray of a residual pyrethroid should be sought now. Black Ants visibly present throughout winter inside a building indicate an ants’ nest or nests within the building, possibly in its foundations. If you are in South Ayrshire, East Ayrshire, North Ayrshire, Inverclyde, East Dunbartonshire, Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire, Glasgow City, North or South Lanarkshire you may wish to contact an insect control expert to control the ants for you. April is the month when most queen wasps come out of hibernation and start to look for food and to build themselves nests. Wasp diet generally consists of dead animals (carcasses of vertebrates and invertebrates) as well as live arthropods (insects, arachnids, crustaceans) pollen (from trees in blossom, decorative and wild flowers), nectar and juices produced by the same and last but not any less important are sweet substances such as sweet soft and alcoholic drinks. In and around buildings pest wasp nests are often constructed inside wall cavities accessed by wasps from the outside via holes and gaps in brickwork, in lofts with wasps gaining entry through small gaps between roof tiles or slates, under the roof in outbuildings, inside bird boxes, greenhouses etc..
